For hundreds of years the Citizen-Soldiers of the National Guard have come to the aid of their neighbors during times of need. We play a key role during floods, fires and other natural disasters. Our mission mandates helping communities during natural disasters and civil emergencies.
As a backbone of our nation, we are ready to defend the country in peacetime and to repel enemy forces during combat. We are trained in the use of various weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, reconnaissance techniques as well as many other important peacekeeping skills.
South Dakota Guardsmen are under a direct jurisdiction of the state and can be called by the governor to serve their community during natural disasters and civil emergencies. We stand ready to protect life and property of our fellow citizens. We strive to preserve peace, institute order and public safety during a time of distress.
